Passengers (also known by its French name Passagers) opened at Emerson’s Cutler Majestic Theatre on September 25 for a nineteen day run. It is the eighth show the 7 Fingers as they call themselves has presented in Boston and judging by the excited audience the night I saw it, it will not be the last.

Each show has a topic that drives it. In Passengers it has to do with departures and arrivals on trains or the coming and going of life. In fact, the company has done a lot of coming and going with Passengers. After its initial opening in Montreal in the fall of 2016, Passengers toured extensively in Europe and Chile. After leaving Boston the 7 Fingers will complete their American tour.

The 7 Fingers is one of several companies in England, France, the U.S. and Canada that develop stories which are performed using circus skills such as acrobatics, aerial arts, music, song, acting, juggling, and hula hoops .

Although the company is a collective, each work has a director and choreographer. While new performers are sometimes hired, the director is invariably one of the initial circus troupe. In this case, it is Shana Carroll who also serves as the choreographer. The performers work together to create the final project which can take more than six months. Early performances take place in Montreal, the capital city of circuses in North America.

Over the years 7 Fingers have branched out and acquired their own theatre in Montreal located in the city’s entertainment district.

Passengers plays through October 13 at the Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre at 219 Tremont Street, Boston. Tel. 617-824-8400
