Ottawa Fringe: I Am the Most Unfeeling Doctor in the World a Moving Tell-All
Dr. Melissa Yuan-Innes is not an actor; Fringe is a new territory for her, one that she has appeared to full-heartedly embrace both in performance and, rather endearingly, in spectatorship . In her hour of storytelling, we as an audience don’t notice or mind an occasional word fumble or lapse in finesse; Yuan-Innes’ honesty and candor make her a captivating presence onstage. Yuan-Innes masterfully connects moments of humor, nostalgia, grief, confusion, and hope into three distinct tales from the Emergency Room, with a winning charisma and infectious sunny disposition.
I had the pleasure of seeing an earlier version of Yuan-Innes’ performance at the Emerging Creators’ Unit in early May; this piece has absolutely blossomed since then, with more attention paid to small details and the preservation of specificity. What’s truly remarkable about this piece is its narrative arc and emotional trajectory; we as an audience go on something of an emotional rollercoaster, and oh-so-willingly hand Dr. Yuan-Innes the power to manipulate our feelings. The pacing is just right (with the exception of a too-long Ghostbusters homage), and the inclusion of Yuan-Innes’ own personal grief creates an added layer of trust between artist and spectator. Yuan-Innes is a natural writer and speaker, fully embodying the inner spirit of the Ottawa Fringe with her attitude and commitment to growth.
I Am the Most Unfeeling Doctor in the World is a must-see at this year’s Fringe. I laughed, I cried, I reminisced, and I smiled the whole hour.
