Suds, the Rock Musical with the 47 hit songs: A Tuneful Season Opener at 1000 Islands Playhouse

There’s something to be said for light entertainment, especially when it’s well done and SUDS, the season opener at the 1000 Islands Playhouse is very well done. It’s an enjoyable piece of fluff that draws on 60s nostalgia using 47 hit songs of the period, (I counted), to tie together a totally improbably plot. Set in a laundromat, it concerns young Cindy’s lack of a love life and the attempts by not one, not two, but three guardian angels to help her out.

The script is really just an excuse to tie together the terrific songs. Unlike so many later juke-box musicals, writers Melina Gilb, Steve Gunderson and Bryan Scott got permission to use the cream of the 60s crop. The script, though funny, is kept to a minimum and the concentration is on the almost non-stop music.

The NAC English Theatre is closing out its season with a production in the Studio of MISS CALEDONIA, written and performed by Melody A. Johnson. Directed by Rich Roberts and Aaron Willis with musical direction and subtle violin accompaniment by Alison Porter, MISS CALEDONIA is based on the true story of Miss Johnson’s mother, Peggy Douglas. Set in the mid-50s, it chronicles Peggy’s effort to escape the drudgery of life on the farm by becoming a movie star. The first step on the journey is her attempt to win the local beauty pageant.

OTTAWA, April 24, 2013 — Making its anticipated NAC debut, Alonzo King LINES Ballet presents a double-bill including an innovative reimagining of Scheherazade. Founder, Artistic Director and choreographer, Alonzo King fuses ancient Persian, Sanskrit, and Arabic stories with ballet filtered through a contemporary lens. In Resin, the company gloriously interprets rhythm and melody in a suite of solos, duets, and ensemble dances.

Alonzo King LINES Ballet takes to the Southam Hall stage at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013. The matinee was added due to popular demand.

Magnetic North Theatre Festival Unveils 2013 Programme ‘CANADA, ON STAGE.’

OTTAWA – The annual festival, which alternates between its home base in Ottawa and other Canadian cities every other year, is back in Canada’s Capital and will run June 7-15 at the National Arts Centre, University of Ottawa Academic Hall and Arts Court.

Magnetic North Artistic Director Brenda Leadlay proudly unveiled the programming for the 2013 Festival.

Ils ont bousculé, marqué, enchanté le public de Montréal, et c’est avec un réel enthousiasme qu’ils le retrouveront bientôt à l’occasion du Festival TransAmériques.

Chef de file de la nouvelle danse européenne, Boris Charmatz est de retour dans la métropole après 10 ans d’absence pour une fascinante Levée des conflits qui réunit 24 danseurs. Transportée par l’effervescence qu’elle a connue l’an dernier, la compagnie italienne MOTUS a choisi Montréal pour la création mondiale de Nella tempesta. Marie Brassard confie elle aussi au public du Festival la découverte d’un nouveau spectacle envoûtant, Trieste. Après l’ébranlement de Tempest en 2011, le chorégraphe samoan Lemi Ponifasio revient en force avec une œuvre essentielle : Birds with Skymirrors. Ginette Laurin poursuit l’Onde de choc de 2010 avec KHAOS qui souligne près de trente ans de belle création d’O Vertigo. Enfin, l’inépuisable Louise Lecavalier se réinvente chorégraphe dansSo Blue.

Les Marchands, Je tremble, Cercles/ Fictions, Au Monde, Le petit Chaperon rouge, Cendrillon, Ma Chambre froide (voir Le Théâtre du Blog)…. Joël Pommerat a su en quelque vingt ans construire une œuvre théâtrale des plus singulières et des plus poétiques. C’est sans doute l’auteur français vivant avec Novarina le plus connu à l’étranger. Et, fait assez rare dans le théâtre actuel, il a aussi mis en scène ses pièces, et l’on on y reconnaît tout de suite sa signature: texte à l’écriture exigeante sur des thèmes comme la vie économique de la société française observée au quotidien, la famille et les relations entre gens d’en-haut et gens d’en-bas, mais comme approchés dans une vision aussi étrange que poétique, conception d’un espace scénographique frontal ou en rond où les éléments de décor d’Eric Soyer-qui signe aussi les lumières, tout aussi exigeantes et d’une intelligence et d’une beauté exceptionnelle-apparaissent comme par magie, mise en scène et direction d’acteurs d’une rigueur absolue .
