Stratford suspends festival 2020

Stratford Festival

Today we came to the heartbreaking conclusion that our spectacular 2020 season cannot go on as planned, and so we have put the entire season on hold while we wait for a signal from government that tells us it will be safe to move forward – for you, and for all of us. In all likelihood, that means we will have to delay any programming until next year. But if, by some miracle, we are able to open our doors sooner, we will let you know. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to share a special fall or holiday show together?

Like yours, our lives have been turned upside down. Our work has stopped, and for a charitable organization like the Stratford Festival, that means we no longer have a source of income.

Thoughts on the pandemic, confinement and the theatre community in Ottawa and the region

Thoughts on the pandemic, confinement and the theatre community in Ottawa and the region

Corioolanus

You must have noticed that there have been no reviews lately. This of course reflects the situation in Ottawa  which shows us that there are no live performances happening in the city because of confinement.  However, many artsits and many theatre groups are working on virtual performances, and video tapes that reflect past performances that are being brought back to local audiences. Stratford is showing last seasons performances on a regular basis, the Gladstone has presented  Pierre Brault and is no doubt preparing other on line events.  Much behond Ottawa you can find performances coming in from Russia (Moscow), France, Germany and a lot of countries where professional theatres are still trying to show as much as they can from their facebooks or their own sites.  Take the time to google all  the theatres in the world including theatres in Canada of course and you will no doubt come across some exciting events that are often free but not always.  It is important that the artists involved make a bit of money to continue their work.

ONEGIN      Written by Alexander Pushkin

Red Torch Theatre, Novosibirsk

Timofey Kulyabin’s Golden Mask Award winning Onegin removes all expectations of Pushkin’s novel in verse and places you not in some historical epoch, but in today’s world, immersed in the inner thoughts, hopes, despairs, passions and disappointments that drift in, through and around the 4 central figures, Onegin, Tatiana, Olga and Lensky. There are no grand balls, no fans, no lorgnettes, no “Encyclopedia of Russian life”. Just a quiet love story that perfectly conveys the attitude of the great poet and how very much his masterwork still resonates with our 21st century reality.

Winner 2 Golden Mask Awards

“Every gesture, stare or word is infused with Pushkin’s mercilessness and tenderness” – Russian Sibnet

“Director Timofey Kulyabin is one of the most interesting directors of his generation and a virtuoso pro” – St Petersburg Theatre Journal

Lucy Kirkwood’s drama, now appearing at Boston’s SpeakEasy Stage, deals with climate change. Its three characters, now elderly, were formerly nuclear scientists. Shortly before the play begins an earthquake followed by a tsunami, reminiscent of the 2011 events in Japan, destroyed a nuclear power plant forcing two of them, Robin (Tyrees Allen) and Hazel (Paula Plum), a married couple to leave their large home for a small cottage just outside the exclusion zone. They are coping with the circumstances as best they can. Robin goes out every day supposedly to feed the cows they keep, but in reality he buries them since they were killed by radiation.

Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical

Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical

“Hair” the first Rock Musical opened in 1967 for six weeks at the New York Shakespeare Festival Theatre and moved to the Biltmore Theatre on Broadway the following year where it was a hit. The book and lyrics were written by Gerome Ragni and James Rado (both actors in the play) while the music was composed by Galt MacDermot.

Initially, the show took reviewers and audiences by surprise with its anti-war plot, nudity, mixed race relationships, and homosexuality. Over time reactions changed and the musical became popular world-wide and was translated into many languages before disappearing.

In 2010, the play received a Tony for the best revival of a musical which once again brought the work to the forefront and may have induced Michael J. Bobbitt, the current artistic director of Boston’s New Repertory, to choose it. Opening night at the New Rep the audience was filled with excited middle aged and elderly people, many of whom were dressed as hippies.
